India (Texan Aces) win Swiss Teams at NEC Cup in Tokyo, JapanFebruary 16, 2014
India-Texan Aces (G.Venkatesh, J.M.Shah, P.Sridhar and S.Sundar Ram) won the Yokohama Swiss Teams
at NEC Bridge festival at Tokyo, Japan. Except for the finalists, all the other teams in the main event
participated in this event as well. Team India scored 106.46 after 7 rounds of 8 brds each.

The team and players have shown a lot of character by coming back strongly to do well in
other events after disappointment in main event.
Chennai based pairs, P.Sridhar-S.Sundarram finished 3rd out of 50 pairs or so
at Yokahama IMP Pairs for non-qualifiers at 19th edition of NEC Cup, Tokyo.
In the team (TO4) event, Team India (G.Venkatesh, J.M.Shah, P.Sridhar, S.Sundar Ram,
Subhash Gupta and Rajeswar Tewari) started superbly and were positioned 2nd and 3rd resp
at the end of first 2 days. They were just 2 VPs off the top spot at the end of 8th round and
required just 33 VPs in the next 4 rounds. Unfortunately, they had a very bad 3rd day losing
all their 4 matches and missed out on qualification to QFs. They had played most of the
top teams in the first couple of days, hence their last day capitulation was all the more perplexing.
In my view, 12 rounds of swiss league for just 45 teams is bit excessive and our team
was always in the top 8 except at the end of last couple of rounds.
Butler scoring of India pairs in TO4 duplicate is as follows:
a) Subhash Gupta-Rajeswar Tewari – 0.44 IMPs (112 brds, 25th rank)
b) P.Sridhar-S.Sundar Ram – 0.21 IMPs (112 brds, 42nd rank)
c) J.M.Shah-G.Venkatesh – 0.06 IMPs (112 brds, 60st rank)
