European Open 2013 – Bulgarian Pair’s Dramatic TriumphJune 19, 2013
They won in 2007 in Antalya, were second in San Remo in 2009 (when they were also members of the winning Mixed Team) and with their victory in yesterday’s Mixed Pairs Championship Bulgaria’s Rosen Gunev and Dessy Popova are now the toast of Ostend as they celebrate their third European Open title, which confirms them as one of the best Mixed Pairs in the world. The runners-up were France’s Marc Bompis and Sylvie Willard, with the Bulgarian/Turkish combination of Zahari Zahariev and Netsy Sayer third.
The only Indian player playing in today’s events, Usha Kothari (playing with Roger Mundy of England) finished 43rd among 60 pairs in the Open MP Pairs.
Upcoming main events include Mixed Swiss Teams (Jun 19-Jun 21), Open/Women’s/Senior teams (starting Jun 22) and Open pairs (starting Jun 25).
Texan Aces, an Indian team has had a few creditable performances in the Open teams event, losing in the quarters, semis and finals on 3 separate occasions. Let’s wish them and other Indian teams in the fray all the very best!
