BFAME Qualifiers Spotted

Open Teams – INDIA & BAHRAIN qualify for BERMUDA BOWL from ZONE-4. India and Bahrain open teams will represent Zone-4 in the Bermuda Bowl 2013 to be held at Bali, Indonesia, from 16th Sep to 29th Sep 2013. They both qualified by beating their opponents in the 4-session, 64-boards, OPEN Teams semi-finals. In the first semi-final between India & United Arab Emirates, India started with a carry over of 16 IMPs. UAE gave them a good fight in the 1st set, which India won by a mere 7 imps (29-22). But, India tightened the screws in the 2nd set winning the 2nd set easily by 66-11, UAE losing 3 more imps as penalty, UAE played well to take the 3rd set by 25 imps (50-25) and kept the match alive. However, India turned out to be too experienced opponents for UAE. India won the 4th set by 19 imps (41-20) and the match by 77 imps (177- 100).The Indian OPEN Team is being represented by Mrs. Kiran NADAR, B. Satyanarayana, Sunit CHOKSHI K.R. VENKATRAMAN, B. PRABHAKAR & Rajeshwar TEWARI whereas the United Arab Emirates team is being represented by Mohamed MANAF, Wael AGAMAWI, Dr. Hesham ATTEF, Khaled HASSAN, Tamer EISSA and Ahmed MOUNIR.

The second semi-final between Bangladesh & Bahrain was far more interesting. Bangladesh started with a carry over of 16, but Bahrain played well in the 1st set to reduce the deficit by 9 imps (43-34). They further gained 13 imps in 2nd set (40-27) to lead 83-77 at half way stage. The 3rd set fully belonged to Bahrain. They thrashed their opponents 57-16 to take a big lead. Though Bangladesh gained 6 imps (41-35) in the last set, it turned out to be a convincing victory for the Bahrain team. Which won the match 175-134. The Bahrain team is represented by Wael BASIONY, Teodoras MACI, Imran Ali ABEDI, Meir NONOO, Mahesh LAKHANI, whereas Bangladesh team is represented by Mirza Sajid ISPAHANI, A.H.M KAMRUZZAMAN, Md. Zahid HOSSAIN, Shah Zia-ul HAQUE, Md. Asifur Rahman CHOWDHURY & Md. Moshiur RAHMAN. Tomorrow India plays Bahrain in a 32-boards final

Women Teams – PAKISTAN tops in the WOMEN Teams event. After a grueling 4 round-robins (of 3 matches each), the PAKISTAN Women team (AZWER Zeenat, AGHA Rubina, DOSSA Qudsia, BOKHARI Roshan Ara, SAEED HAI Rubina, RAZA Fatima), topped with a score of 213.5 VPs. The Indian team (Hema DEORA, Marianne KARMARKAR, Rita CHOKSI, Bharati DEY, Tutu NARULA & Asha SURANA) came in 2nd position with 205.5 VPs. The Palestine & Sri Lanka teams finished on 3rd & 4th positions with 164 & 135 VPs respectively. Both Pakistan & India thus qualify for the Venice Cup from Zone-4. Tomorrow both Pakistan & India will play a 32-boards final, which will determine the winner of the Women Teams for the coveted Vinodini Goenka Trophy, in the BFAME Championships 2013.

Seniors Teams – INDIA tops in SENIORS Teams. The fourth and last round-robin of the Seniors team event got completed yesterday and the Indian team comprising of Ashok GOEL, Vinod SHARMA, Sunil MACHHAR, R. SRIDHARAN, Kamal MUKHERJEE & Aloke SADHU topped with a score of 224 VPs. The Bangladesh team (HAQUE Brig.(Retd) M. Azizul, HAQUE Khandakar Muzharul, AHMED A.K. Firoze, HUSSAIN A.T.M. Moazzem) were 2nd ranked with 176; Sri Lanka with 168.5. and Pakistan with 150.5 VPs were ranked 3rd and 4th. Both India & Bangladesh thus qualify to represent Zone-4 in the Seniors Cup. Tomorrow India plays Bangladesh in a 32-boards final, which will determine the winner of the Seniors Teams, for the Nawzad Shaker Trophy, in the BFAME Championships 2013.
