THE BATTLE FOR BRIDGE SUPREMACY STARTS
The 55th Winter National Bridge Championship organised by Gujarat Bridge Federation under the aegis of Bridge Federation of India, commenced yesterday at the Karnavati Club, Ahmedabad. The championship will continue till Monday 23rd December, 2013.
This is the 3rd time that Winter National Bridge Championship is being hosted by the city of Ahmedabad. The earlier nationals were held in 1986 & 1993 respectively.
Mr. Jyotindra Sodhan, the senior most bridge player of Ahmedabad inaugurated the championship by lighting of the traditional lamp. The President BFI, Mr. N.R. Kirubakara Moorthy welcomed all the participants to the championship, requesting them to adhere to event timings and to have an enjoyable championship before handing over the championship to the Chief Tournament Director.
The championship commenced yesterday with the Match Point Open Pair event for SHREE CEMENT Trophy. The response to the event was very enthusiastic with 215 pairs participating in the event. The pairs were divided into 8 sections (Sections “A” to Section “D” had 14 tables each and Section “E” to Section “G” had 13 tables each. The last section “F” had 13 tables with EW-13 bye in the section).
As per the format of this 2-day event, all the participants yesterday played a 3-session elimination round of
18 boards each. The leaders after Session-1 were:

The 2nd session was won by A.K. Baliarsingh – PK Nayak with a huge score of 966.9 (75.7%). G. Dalai – RC Nayak with 902.7 (70.6%) were 2nd and K. Bendre and A. Bhattacharya with 901.8 (70.6%) were 3rd. The lead changed hands at the end of Session-2 and the leaders were:

The 3rd session was won by Vinay Desai – Arun Bapat with a score of 858.5 (67.2%). Sunit Chokshi – Keyzad Anklesaria with 845.0 (66.1 %) were 2nd and Anand Samant – R A Agarwal with 818.7 (64.1%) were 3rd. The leaders after the 3rd and last session were:

The TOP 78 pairs have qualified for the GOLD event and will get 10% of their day-1 scores as carry over to the 2-session (26 boards each) GOLD event to be played today with Barometer Scoring.
The participants who could not qualify to the TOP 78 positions will play the SILVER event of OPEN Pairs today. There will be no carry over for Silver event participants. A new pair, if interested, can also participate today in the Silver event.
